The Bank of Springfield Center occupies a single downtown block, and that shapes every transportation decision for a conference there. Sessions release hundreds of people at the same minute. The closest hotels are a short walk away, the closest airport is ten minutes out, and the garage next door is too low for a coach.
The short version
Moving a conference crowd through downtown Springfield
- The venue
- One Convention Center Plaza, with a 44,000 square foot column-free main hall and 21,000 square feet of lower level meeting rooms.
- Closest airport
- Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI), about 3 miles and roughly 10 minutes from the front door.
- Garage clearance
- 6 feet 6 inches in the Plaza Parking Garage, so coaches unload at the door and stage elsewhere.
- Lead time
- About a week for large groups. A reservation coordinator builds the loop schedule around your program.
This guide uses the venue’s published facility and parking information, checked in September 2026, plus our Central Illinois drive times. It covers airport arrivals, hotel loops, vehicle sizes, timing, and the drop-off.
What the Bank of Springfield Center gives you to work with
The venue opened in 1979 as the Prairie Capital Convention Center and took its current name in 2017. It can host a trade show and an arena concert in the same week, so your conference may share the block with another event.
| Detail | What it means for your ground plan |
|---|---|
| Main hall, 44,000 sq ft column-free | Sessions and trade shows empty into the same lobbies at once. |
| Arena seating listed at 7,700 | A concert or game on your dates fills the drop-off points and the garage. |
| Sixteen meeting rooms, 30 to 1,000 people | Breakouts stagger, so arrivals can stagger too. |
| Adjacent to two hotels | Part of your block walks. The rest needs a ride. |
| Drop-off on two sides | North at the Washington Street canopy, south on Adams Street. |
Airport arrivals and how far out they are
Attendees at a Springfield IL convention center event arrive three ways: a short flight into SPI, a longer flight into St. Louis or Chicago, or their own car. The first two are yours to solve.
| Airport | Code | Miles | Drive |
|---|---|---|---|
| Abraham Lincoln Capital | SPI | 3 | 10m |
| Bloomington-Normal | BMI | 68 | 1h10m |
| Peoria International | PIA | 75 | 1h15m |
| St. Louis Lambert | STL | 107 | 1h40m |
| Chicago O’Hare | ORD | 201 | 3h27mPlan this one as a half day each way. |
American, Allegiant, and Breeze serve SPI, so many attendees land ten minutes from the venue. For those flying into O’Hare, our post on O’Hare parking versus a car service explains why sending a vehicle beats a rental car. Group arrivals are the heart of our conference and event transportation work, and VIP pickups ride the same schedule through Springfield airport service.
Running a shuttle loop between downtown hotels and the venue
Two hotels sit next to the building, but a conference of any size spills into properties blocks away, and weather turns a pleasant walk into a complaint. The math is simple once you time one circuit: driving, plus boarding, plus unloading, equals your cycle.
| Vehicle | Seats | Loops per hour | Seats per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sprinter Van | 14 | 4 | 56 |
| Shuttle Coach | 22 to 35 | 4 | 88 to 140 |
| Two shuttle coaches | 44 to 70 | 4 | 176 to 280 |
Treat that as a starting frame. Downtown lights, another event letting out, and slow boarding stretch the cycle. Size the loop to the people who must reach the hall before the opening session.
Continuous loop
- Vehicles circle with no published times.
- Best for long exhibit hours.
- Attendees stand at the door until the next one.
- More hours, because the loop never stops.
Scheduled departures
- Posted times tied to session blocks.
- Best for keynotes and offsite dinners.
- Attendees plan around the printed time.
- Fewer hours, heavier peaks, bigger vehicle.
Most programs use both: scheduled runs before the general session and the evening event, then a light loop between. Our employee and hotel shuttle service works the same way.
Picking vehicle sizes for your group count
One full coach beats three vans on a short downtown hop, because every extra vehicle is another drop-off slot. Longer runs to an offsite venue flip the logic toward smaller groups.
| Vehicle | Passengers | Where it fits an event |
|---|---|---|
| Executive Sedan | 2 to 3 | Keynote speaker, sponsor, board member. |
| Luxury SUV | 5 to 6 | Small leadership group with luggage. |
| Sprinter Van | 14 | Flight-by-flight airport pickups, committee dinners. |
| Stretch Limousine | 8 to 10 | An executive arrival that should look like one. |
| Limousine Coach | 25 to 30 | Venue to an evening event. |
| Shuttle Coach | 22 to 35 | Hotel loops and offsite sessions. |
For more than one coach load, or multi-day programs with repeating runs, see charter bus and group travel and the shuttle coach specs.
Timing arrivals and departures around the session schedule
Work backward from the agenda. Your general session doors are the fixed point, and everything upstream is arithmetic. A 200-person opening at 8:30 a.m. does not mean a shuttle at 8:15.
| Time | What happens |
|---|---|
| 7:15 a.m. | First run leaves the farthest hotel. Early arrivals and staff. |
| 7:30 to 8:10 a.m. | Two coaches loop. Peak volume lands here. |
| 8:10 a.m. | Last scheduled run before doors. Announce it twice. |
| 8:30 a.m. | Session begins. Vehicles stage off the block. |
| Session end | Coaches are back at the door before the room empties. |
The block does not grow on the morning of your general session. The only thing you can change is the schedule that feeds it.
Departure day works in reverse. Attendees leaving from SPI need less runway than someone catching an evening flight out of St. Louis.
Parking and drop-off realities downtown
The Plaza Parking Garage sits on the west side with entrances on 7th and Washington. It runs 24 hours with no attendant, and it is where most drive-in attendees end up.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Hourly | $1 minimum per hour, $7 daily maximum |
| Event parking | $5 to $10, set by the event |
| Monthly | $60 for unlimited in and out |
| Lost ticket | $25Exit within 15 minutes of paying. |
| Clearance | 6 feet 6 inches |
| Payment | At the gate or at pay-on-foot stations |
Clearance is what catches planners. Nothing taller than a passenger car enters, so coaches, Sprinters, and tall SUVs work the drop-off points outside. The venue lists drop-off on the north side at the Washington Street canopy between 7th and 9th, and on the south side at Adams Street.
Planning the whole thing with a reservation coordinator
Ground transportation is one line on your run of show, and it is easier to build once than to patch on day one.
- Send the agenda. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote with session times, hotel list, and headcount.
- Set the peaks. We mark the two or three moments when everyone moves at once, then size vehicles to those, not the average.
- Fix the drop-off plan. Pick the drop-off side, the staging spot, and who signals the driver when a room lets out.
- Lock the schedule. About a week ahead for large groups, at least 72 hours for smaller trips. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day if the program shifts.
- Run the event. Large events can have an on-site coordinator working arrivals and departures with your staff.
Executive Transportation has moved Central Illinois groups since 2004, with uniformed chauffeurs and service to every major airport within about six hours of Springfield.

Bank of Springfield Center transportation questions
Is the Bank of Springfield Center the same as the Prairie Capital Convention Center?
Executive Transportation books group travel under both names because they are the same building. The venue opened in October 1979 as the Prairie Capital Convention Center and took the Bank of Springfield Center name in June 2017. It stands at One Convention Center Plaza and holds a 44,000 square foot column-free main hall. Older attendee packets still carry the former name. See how we handle conference and event transportation.
Where do buses and shuttles drop off at the Bank of Springfield Center?
Executive Transportation uses the venue’s own drop-off points: the Washington Street canopy on the north side between 7th and 9th, and the Adams Street side to the south. The Plaza Parking Garage beside the building clears 6 feet 6 inches, so a shuttle coach or Sprinter cannot pull into it. Your vehicle unloads at the door and stages off the block until pickup. Call (217) 523-5466 to walk through your load-in.
How do conference attendees get from the airport to downtown Springfield, Illinois?
Executive Transportation picks up at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport (SPI), about 3 miles and 10 minutes from the venue, and at St. Louis Lambert, about 107 miles south. American, Allegiant, and Breeze serve SPI as of September 2026. Attendees landing on the same flight ride in together on a Sprinter van or a shuttle coach rather than splitting into separate cars. See our Springfield airport car service.
What size vehicle do I need for a 40 person conference group?
Executive Transportation would move 40 people on one shuttle coach seating 22 to 35, with a Sprinter van behind it for the rest, or two coaches when the group travels together to an offsite dinner. An executive sedan holds two to three, a luxury SUV five to six, and a Sprinter van 14. Luggage and stop count change the answer. Compare the shuttle coach and the rest of the fleet.
How much does conference transportation cost in Springfield, Illinois?
Executive Transportation quotes event work by the hour, with the minimum stated up front, and four things move the number: vehicle size, how many hours a hotel loop runs, how many vehicles run at once, and whether the schedule reaches into late-night hours. A four-hour loop on one coach is a different number of hours from airport runs spread across two arrival days. Request a Quote for your dates.
How far in advance should an event planner book group transportation in Springfield?
Executive Transportation asks for about a week on large groups and prefers at least 72 hours on smaller trips, though dispatch answers 24 hours a day when plans shift. Coaches and Sprinter vans go first during graduation season and big downtown weekends, so early dates matter more than early details. Large events can also have an on-site coordinator working your arrivals and departures. Call (217) 523-5466 or see charter bus and group travel.
