The bus from Champaign to Chicago is the default answer on this corridor, and for a great many trips it earns that spot. Coaches board at Illinois Terminal downtown and at two stops on the University of Illinois campus, then run north to O’Hare, Midway, and downtown Chicago. The useful question is which trips it does not fit.
The short version
Four ways north, and what each one suits
- Coach
- Peoria Charter runs a scheduled Champaign-Urbana route with two campus stops. Greyhound and FlixBus board at Illinois Terminal, 45 East University Avenue.
- Train
- Amtrak’s Illini and Saluki run daily between Chicago and Carbondale, and the City of New Orleans uses the same line.
- Road
- About 155 miles and 2 hours 35 minutes to O’Hare, about 133 miles and 2 hours 10 minutes to Midway.
- Chauffeured car
- Door to door on your own clock, quoted by the vehicle instead of by the seat.
Every carrier detail below was read on that operator’s own site on September 15, 2026, and the mileage comes from the table we use for Central Illinois trips. Service here gets revised between terms, so confirm your departure with the carrier close to the day you travel.
Taking the bus from Champaign to Chicago
Peoria Charter, which describes itself as moving people through the Midwest since 1941, operates the scheduled Champaign-Urbana service most students already know. Its stop list gives one boarding point downtown and two on campus: the south platform at Illinois Terminal, the Armory on East Armory Avenue, and Illinois Street Residence Hall. At the Chicago end it lists the O’Hare Multi-Modal Facility, both levels at Midway, downtown Chicago on Desplaines Street, and suburban stops including Woodfield Mall and Oakbrook Center.
Greyhound and FlixBus each list Champaign service as well, and both load in the bus bays at that same downtown address. Between them this corridor has more scheduled departures than anything else here.
| Carrier | Where it boards locally | Chicago-area stops listed |
|---|---|---|
| Peoria Charter | Illinois Terminal south platform, the Armory, and ISR on campus | O’Hare Multi-Modal Facility, Midway, downtown Chicago, several suburbs |
| Greyhound | Illinois Terminal bus bays45 E University Ave | Chicago |
| FlixBus | Illinois Terminal bus bays | Chicago |
For one person with a backpack the coach is usually the right call, and that deserves saying plainly. You buy a seat and somebody else watches the road. The limits show when the party grows or the luggage does. Fares are charged per person, so four travelers buy four of them, bags are held to what you can stow, and the timetable is built for midday rather than for a dawn flight.
The train out of Illinois Terminal
Amtrak calls the Champaign-Urbana station Illinois Terminal, gives its address as 45 East University Avenue, and describes it as a busy intermodal center. The Illini and the Saluki run daily between Chicago and Carbondale, and the long distance City of New Orleans follows the same line toward Memphis and New Orleans. Amtrak’s Champaign page describes six daily trains, and the northern end is Union Station.
Rail is genuinely pleasant on this line. You can spread out, work, and step off in the Loop without touching a steering wheel. The catch is geography rather than quality: Union Station sits downtown, not at an airport, so a flight still needs a second leg after you arrive. Seats around a holiday go early.
Driving up I-57, and what waits at the other end
The road route is simple. I-57 runs north out of Champaign County into the Chicago expressway system, and the mileage is modest by Central Illinois standards.
| Destination | Miles | Typical drive |
|---|---|---|
| Chicago O’Hare | 155 | about 2 h 35 m |
| Chicago Midway | 133 | about 2 h 10 m |
| Indianapolis | 131 | about 2 h 5 m |
| St. Louis Lambert | 180 | about 2 h 45 m |
Those figures describe open road. Weekday peaks on the Chicago approaches are the variable no table can carry, and the last thirty miles are where a clean trip turns slow. Parking is the line nobody budgets: an airport garage charges for every day you are gone, and our Midway parking and terminal guide covers what the official lots there charge. Many undergraduates also keep no car in Champaign, which ends the debate early.
Flying out of Willard
Willard Airport at the University of Illinois sits just south of campus and lists nonstop service to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth, flown by American and United. For a traveler connecting onward from either hub, Willard removes the drive entirely and hands the bags off close to home.
The comparison shifts when Chicago itself is the destination, or when the flight you want departs from O’Hare. A short hop plus a connection can take as long as the drive once you count the second trip through security, and a change at the front end puts the rest of the itinerary at risk. Both choices are reasonable. They fail in different ways. If the drive is the answer, our O’Hare car service page covers which terminal you are dropped at and where the car meets you coming home.
On an ordinary Tuesday the coach is the smart answer. On move-out Saturday, with three suitcases and a mini fridge, it is not.
Where a chauffeured car actually wins
A car service is not the cheapest seat on this corridor. It is the best tool for a short list of jobs.
- Move-in and move-out weekends. Bedding, a television, a fridge, and three suitcases do not fit a coach luggage allowance. A Sprinter van holds 14 passengers, and that capacity is mostly cargo room on these runs.
- Parents in town for a game or commencement. One vehicle covers the airport, hotel, stadium, and dinner, and nobody spends the day hunting a parking space.
- A 5 a.m. flight out of O’Hare or Midway. Scheduled service rarely starts early enough to make it. A chauffeur will.
- A group splitting one vehicle. Four or six separate coach seats often land near the cost of one car, and the group arrives together instead of in shifts.
- Trips that end late. A delayed landing plus a 155-mile drive home is what our long distance car service removes.
Scheduled coach or train
- Lowest cost for one or two travelers.
- Priced per seat, so cost climbs with the group.
- Fixed timetable, set luggage limits.
- Drops at a stop, not at your door.
Chauffeured car
- Door to door from a residence hall, a house, or a hotel.
- Quoted per vehicle, so a group shares one number.
- Leaves when your flight or your kickoff requires.
- A uniformed chauffeur handles the driving both ways.
Campus peaks, when every option tightens at once
The University of Illinois calendar governs this corridor more than anything else. Dates move year to year, so watch the pattern rather than a date: move-in at the start of the fall term, home football Saturdays, family and parents weekends, the run-up to each long break, finals, and spring commencement.
These weekends are hard because they squeeze everything at once. Coach seats sell out, trains fill, hotel rooms disappear, the decks near campus back up, and chauffeured vehicles across Central Illinois commit to other work. Wait until the week of commencement and you choose from what is left.
How a Champaign-Urbana ride gets arranged
- Send the trip. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote with the pickup address, date, headcount, and destination.
- Match the vehicle. Two or three travelers fit an executive sedan, five or six a luxury SUV, and up to 14 a Sprinter van. Bigger parties take a shuttle coach.
- Set the clock backward. We work from your flight or event time and build the pickup around the Champaign to O’Hare drive.
- Book the return at the same time. Coming home is the leg people forget, and it is the one worth locking on a peak weekend.
We cover Champaign-Urbana and the rest of Central Illinois, and we run to every Chicago field, including Midway, and to Willard.

Champaign to Chicago travel questions
Is there a bus from Champaign to Chicago from the University of Illinois campus?
Executive Transportation checked the carriers on September 15, 2026. Peoria Charter runs a scheduled Champaign-Urbana coach boarding on Armory Avenue, at Illinois Street Residence Hall, and at Illinois Terminal downtown. Greyhound and FlixBus board there as well. Seats are sold per person, so a family of four buys four of them. Compare it with a Champaign to O’Hare car.
How do I get from Champaign to O’Hare for a 6 a.m. flight?
Executive Transportation drives the 155 miles from Champaign-Urbana to O’Hare in about 2 hours 35 minutes, so a dawn flight means a pickup in the small hours. The first coach or train of the day often reaches Chicago too late to make it. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day. Call (217) 523-5466 about an early departure.
What changes the price of a car from Champaign-Urbana to Chicago?
Executive Transportation prices a Champaign to Chicago trip on distance, the vehicle, the hour of pickup, and whether it is one way or round trip. An overnight run on a peak campus weekend does not price like a midday transfer. The quote covers the vehicle, not each seat, so a group splits one number. Request a Quote with your date and headcount.
How do visiting parents get around Champaign-Urbana for graduation or a home game?
Executive Transportation collects families at O’Hare, Midway, and Willard, drives them into Champaign-Urbana, and handles the runs between hotel, campus, and dinner. On the biggest weekends the coaches and the parking decks fill at the same hour, and a chauffeur sets you down at the door. See our Champaign-Urbana service area.
Should I fly out of Willard or be driven to O’Hare from Champaign?
Executive Transportation serves both. Willard Airport at the University of Illinois lists nonstop service to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth, which suits travelers connecting onward. When the flight you actually want leaves O’Hare, driving the 155 miles removes a connection and a second trip through security. See our Willard Airport page.
How far ahead should a Champaign group book a vehicle for move-in weekend?
Executive Transportation prefers 72 hours’ notice and about a week for larger groups, though campus peaks are the exception. Move-in, family weekend, home football Saturdays, and commencement pull vehicles from across the region at once, so call as soon as the date is set. Short-notice trips depend on availability.
