Bloomington IL to Chicago is a trip with five honest answers, and the cheapest one is not automatically the right one. I-55 runs about 131 miles from Bloomington-Normal to O’Hare and about 122 miles to Midway. Amtrak boards at Uptown Station in Normal. What fits depends on where in Chicago you are headed, what time you need to be there, and how many people are going.
The short version
What the choice really comes down to
- By road
- About 131 miles and about 2 hours 15 minutes to O’Hare, about 122 miles and about 2 hours to Midway. Traffic owns the last stretch.
- By rail
- The Lincoln Service and the Texas Eagle stop at Uptown Station in Normal and finish inside Union Station in the Loop.
- By coach
- Peoria Charter schedules buses from Normal to Chicago-area stops that have included O’Hare and downtown.
- By chauffeur
- Earns its place on pre-dawn flights, groups sharing one vehicle, multi-stop days, and arrivals with no car to park.
Mileage and drive times below come from our own route data for Central Illinois. Rail and bus details come from the operators, checked on September 15, 2026, and both change with the season, so treat this as a shape rather than a timetable. Fares are left out on purpose, because they move.
Bloomington IL to Chicago: the five options next to each other
Start with where each option actually puts you, because that is what decides the rest of the day.
| Option | Where it leaves you | The tradeoff you accept |
|---|---|---|
| Your own car | Anywhere you want, if you can store the car once you arrive. | You do the driving, then you solve parking at both ends. |
| Amtrak | Union Station, walking distance to much of the Loop. | Fixed departures, and a ride at the Chicago end if your meeting is not downtown. |
| Scheduled coach | Airport terminals and suburban stops, plus a downtown stop. | Fixed departures, and intermediate stops that stretch the clock. |
| Flying from BMI | An O’Hare concourse, still 17 miles from the Loop. | Check-in and screening for a short hop you mainly want as a connection. |
| Chauffeured car | The exact address, at the time you set. | You book ahead instead of deciding at the last minute. |
Driving yourself, and the parking that comes attached
For a single traveler with a flexible day, your own car is the low-cost option and nobody should pretend otherwise. The costs that surprise people arrive later. The round trip to O’Hare is about 262 miles. Many employers reimburse at the IRS business standard mileage rate, 76 cents a mile for the second half of 2026, which is meant to cover fuel and the wear you are putting on the car.
| Line item | How it is figured | Cost |
|---|---|---|
| Mileage | 262 round trip miles at 76 cents | $199.12 |
| Parking | 3 days in Economy Lot G at $16Covered Lot F runs $30 a day. | $48.00 |
| Total | Before tolls, and before the drive home | $247.12 |
Downtown is a different problem. City meters in the Loop run $7.00 an hour from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., and $3.50 an hour overnight, with the central business district outside the Loop at $4.75 an hour. Garages vary block by block and are worth pricing before you leave. If the airport lots are what you are weighing, our breakdown of O’Hare parking against a car service works through every lot, and the Bloomington to O’Hare route page covers the drive itself.
The Bloomington to Chicago train, and when it simply wins
Amtrak boards at Uptown Station, 11 Uptown Circle in Normal, listed on Amtrak timetables as Bloomington-Normal. Three Lincoln Service trains run each direction daily, and the Texas Eagle adds one more. On the timetables published for September 15, 2026, the Chicago leg runs roughly two hours to two and a half hours, with the Texas Eagle a bit longer.
For one person going to the Loop on a weekday, this is usually the best answer available, and it is the one we point people toward. You walk out of Union Station into downtown with no car to store and no expressway to fight. Book early for the fare you want, confirm the current schedule at amtrak.com, and remember that the train is the beginning of the trip if your destination sits out in the suburbs.
The coach from Normal IL to Chicago
Peoria Charter runs scheduled service out of Bloomington-Normal, picking up at Uptown Station and at Watterson Commons. Chicago-area stops in its network have included O’Hare Terminal 2 departures, the O’Hare Multi-Modal Facility, Midway, downtown Chicago, and suburban stops such as Woodfield Mall, Oakbrook Center, and Downers Grove. The company also operates the Amtrak Thruway connection between Peoria and Bloomington-Normal.
Timetables shift with the academic calendar and the day of the week, so check the current one before you plan around it. The bus is a genuinely good deal for a student, a solo flyer, or anyone whose schedule bends. What you give up is control: departures are set, the northbound run makes intermediate stops, and a delay on the road is a delay you ride out.
Flying out of Bloomington, and what that is really for
Central Illinois Regional Airport lists three airlines: Allegiant, American, and Delta. American flies nonstop to Chicago O’Hare and to Dallas-Fort Worth. That O’Hare nonstop is a useful thing to own, but it is a connecting tool more than a way to reach Chicago. Once you add the airport arrival, screening, and the ride from the terminal into the city, the flight rarely beats the road for a downtown meeting.
Where it earns its keep is a long onward itinerary with your bags checked through, especially an international connection. Details for both ends sit on our Central Illinois Regional Airport and Chicago O’Hare pages.
Pick the option that matches the trip in front of you. The train is often right, and saying so costs us nothing.
When a chauffeured car is the honest answer
Four situations turn the comparison around, and they are the ones we are called for most from Bloomington-Normal. All four are ordinary long distance car service bookings.
- Flights that leave before the trains do. A 6 a.m. departure needs a pickup in the dark, which is exactly when scheduled service is thinnest.
- A group splitting one vehicle. Five colleagues in a luxury SUV, or fourteen in a Sprinter van, share one quote instead of buying five tickets and coordinating five arrivals. An office that books this run for its people week after week does it as corporate airport transfers, from a flight list rather than a phone call each time.
- A day trip with several stops. The car stays with you between appointments, so nobody re-parks at every address.
- Arriving without a car to park. You are dropped at the door and collected there, which removes the garage from the day entirely.
Better on the train or the bus
- One or two people with a flexible departure time.
- A destination inside walking distance of Union Station.
- Midday travel on a normal weekday.
- Trips where the lowest ticket price is the point.
Better in a chauffeured car
- Pre-dawn departures and late returns from Chicago.
- Three or more travelers moving together.
- Meetings spread across several addresses in one day.
- Luggage, equipment, or guests you are hosting.
- Winter weather on I-55 that you would rather not drive.
How a ride from Bloomington-Normal gets built
- Send the shape of the day. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote with your pickup address, the time you need to arrive, and the headcount.
- Match the vehicle. Two or three passengers fit an executive sedan, five or six ride a luxury SUV, and as many as 14 take a Sprinter van. Bigger parties move up to a shuttle coach.
- Set the pickup. A reservation coordinator works backward from your flight or your first meeting to a departure time from Bloomington-Normal.
- Add the return. Same-day returns, next-week returns, and multi-stop days are all quoted together, so one company owns the whole itinerary.

Getting from Bloomington-Normal to Chicago: common questions
What is the best way to get from Bloomington IL to Chicago?
Executive Transportation tells travelers the honest answer changes with the trip. One person heading downtown on a flexible weekday usually does best on Amtrak out of Uptown Station in Normal. Request a ride or call (217) 523-5466.
How is a chauffeured trip from Bloomington-Normal to Chicago priced?
Executive Transportation quotes the trip, not the passenger. The number moves with distance, vehicle size, the hour of the pickup, and whether the car waits between stops or makes a one-way run. A family of five and a solo traveler in the same SUV see the same quote, which is why groups tend to come out ahead of separate tickets. Send your itinerary through our quote form.
Can one vehicle handle a Chicago day trip with several stops and come back the same night?
Yes. Executive Transportation runs multi-stop days out of Bloomington-Normal, where the chauffeur stays with the group between appointments instead of everyone hunting for a garage at each address. That shape suits sales calls, site visits, and hospital or campus appointments. Tell a reservation coordinator the addresses and the times, and the day gets built around them. See point to point service.
Should I fly from Bloomington to O’Hare or be driven there?
