A St. Louis airport shuttle from Illinois covers far less ground than most travelers assume. Lambert sits about 107 miles from Springfield and about 130 from Quincy, which puts a full-size hub inside a single morning drive for the western half of our area. Chicago, from the same front doors, is nearly twice the trip.
The short version
Lambert, the southbound run, and who it fits
- From Springfield
- About 107 miles and about 1 hour 40 minutes, nearly all of it on I-55 and I-270.
- From Quincy
- About 130 miles and about 2 hours 10 minutes, across the river early and down US 61 in Missouri.
- Against Chicago
- Springfield to O’Hare is about 201 miles and about 3 hours 27 minutes, more than double the southbound run.
- Who it suits
- Springfield, Jacksonville, Quincy, Decatur and the towns west and south of them.
Every distance below comes from the same routing matrix we use to quote trips, written as an approximation because traffic is the one variable it cannot carry. The terminal details were checked on the airport’s own site on September 15, 2026. This post is about the drive itself: which towns Lambert honestly serves, what each road south feels like, and how the last stretch through St. Louis behaves.
Why a St. Louis airport shuttle from Illinois suits the western half
Lambert sits in north St. Louis County, off I-70, which means travelers coming down from Illinois reach the airport before they reach the city. Chicago works the other way around. Going north, the airport is on the far side of an enormous metro area, and the last leg is the part that decides your morning. That one piece of geography drives everything else on this page.
| From | Miles | Drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Springfield | 107 | about 1 hour 40 minutes |
| Quincy | 130 | about 2 hours 10 minutes |
| Decatur | 133 | about 2 hours 20 minutes |
| Bloomington-Normal | 175 | about 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Champaign-Urbana | 180 | about 2 hours 45 minutes |
| Peoria | 182 | about 2 hours 45 minutes |
Read that list honestly and it splits into three groups. Springfield, Quincy and Decatur are Lambert towns, and it is not close. Peoria is a genuine coin flip against Chicago. Bloomington-Normal and Champaign-Urbana sit closer to O’Hare than to Lambert, so we send those travelers north unless the fare or the schedule says otherwise. A car service that tells you every trip should go south is selling you the vehicle, not the plan.
The roads south, and what each one actually drives like
Four different roads feed Lambert from our area, and they are not equivalent. The mileage says one thing; the surface under the tires says another.
- Springfield and Jacksonville. I-55 south past Litchfield, then west on I-270 to cross the river. Four lanes the whole way, gentle grades, very little to think about. This is the easiest airport run we make, whether it starts in Springfield or with our Jacksonville car service.
- Quincy. Cross the Mississippi at Quincy, then run US 61 south past Hannibal and down through northeast Missouri. It is a good road, but it is a US highway rather than an interstate for most of its length, with towns and cross traffic along the way. The Quincy to Lambert run page follows that road mile by mile.
- Decatur. For our Decatur car service, the fast line is southwest on state highways down to I-55 near Litchfield, not west through Springfield. Two lane roads for the first stretch mean the opening half hour sets the tone for the trip. Timings for the whole trip sit on the Decatur to Lambert run page.
- Peoria and Bloomington-Normal. Peoria comes east on I-74 and drops south on I-155 to meet I-55 near Lincoln. Bloomington-Normal simply points down I-55 and stays there.
- Champaign-Urbana. South on I-57 to Effingham, then west on I-70. A different approach entirely, and it reaches St. Louis from the east rather than the north.
The river crossing and the last twenty miles
Which bridge you take depends on which road you came down. The I-55 and I-270 line crosses north of the city at the Chain of Rocks, the US 61 line crosses way back at Quincy and spends its Missouri miles inland, and the I-70 approach from Effingham comes through the middle of the metro. The northern crossings are the reason Springfield and Decatur travelers rarely see downtown St. Louis at all.
The last stretch is where a trip gets its character. Lambert is embedded in north county, so the closing miles share pavement with ordinary St. Louis commuters rather than with airport traffic alone. As a pattern, inbound lanes fill through the morning and outbound lanes fill through the late afternoon, which means an early departure runs against the grain and an evening pickup runs with it. Interstate work happens somewhere on these corridors most years, so we plan the route on the day rather than promising a fixed line.
Why an early southbound departure beats an early northbound one
Work the clock backward and the difference stops being abstract. Lambert points travelers to the TSA guidance of two hours before a domestic flight. For an 8 a.m. departure that puts you at the terminal door by 6 a.m.
| Trip | Drive | At the door | Pickup |
|---|---|---|---|
| Springfield to Lambert | about 1 hour 40 minutes | 6:00 a.m. | about 4:15 a.m. |
| Springfield to O’Hare | about 3 hours 27 minutes | 6:00 a.m. | about 2:30 a.m. |
An hour and forty-five minutes of difference at that hour is not a small thing. One version is an early start. The other is a night you mostly gave up. The southbound trip also finishes before St. Louis fills in, while the northbound trip arrives into Chicago exactly as the region wakes, which is why the Chicago number carries more risk than the clock suggests.
The airport you can reach before the region wakes up is usually worth more than the one with one extra nonstop.
Lambert or O’Hare on total door to gate time
Travelers compare airports on airfare and route maps. The honest comparison starts at your own front door, because the drive is the part you pay for in hours.
| From | To Lambert | To O’Hare |
|---|---|---|
| Springfield | about 1 hour 40 minutes | about 3 hours 27 minutes |
| Decatur | about 2 hours 20 minutes | about 3 hours 10 minutes |
| Peoria | about 2 hours 45 minutes | about 2 hours 50 minutes |
| Champaign-Urbana | about 2 hours 45 minutes | about 2 hours 35 minutes |
| Bloomington-Normal | about 2 hours 45 minutes | about 2 hours 15 minutes |
O’Hare offers more international nonstops, and for some itineraries that settles it. For a domestic trip out of Springfield, the southbound run hands back roughly three and a half hours of the day across both legs, and from Decatur about an hour and forty minutes. What the two trips cost is a separate question with its own arithmetic, and we worked that one out in STL airport parking versus a car service.
Driving north to Chicago
- The widest choice of international nonstops.
- About 201 miles from Springfield, each way.
- The final leg crosses a very large metro area.
- A dawn flight means a departure in the middle of the night.
- Two terminals of walking once you are inside.
Riding south to Lambert
- About half the distance from Springfield, Jacksonville or Quincy.
- The airport arrives before the city does.
- A civilized pickup time for a morning departure.
- One quote covers the vehicle, so a group shares it.
- A uniformed chauffeur takes both legs, including the late one.
Two terminals, and telling us which one you need
Lambert runs two separate terminals, and travelers who have not flown from St. Louis in a few years are the ones most likely to get it wrong. Checked on the airport’s site on September 15, 2026, Terminal 2 handles Southwest, British Airways and Lufthansa. Terminal 1 handles American, Delta, United, Alaska, Air Canada, Frontier and Southern Airways Express. Airlines move between terminals over time, so confirm yours close to the date.
For a chauffeured drop that means one extra line in the booking: the airline, not just the airport. We drop you at the departures door of the correct terminal, and on the return your chauffeur meets you at baggage claim in the terminal your flight actually lands at. Both terminals, and what happens when a flight moves, are covered on our Lambert airport car service page.
Planning the transfer for a group or for one traveler
A solo business trip and a twelve person team leaving the same town are the same drive and two different plans. Both are booked as long distance car service, and both start the same way.
- Send the flight and the pickup address. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote with your departure time, your airline and how many people are riding.
- Match the vehicle to the party. An executive sedan carries two to three, a luxury SUV five to six, a Sprinter van up to 14, and a shuttle coach 22 to 35 for a full team.
- Set the pickup from the gate backward. We take the departure time, subtract the airport guidance, subtract the drive for your town, and give you a time rather than a guess.
- Book the return at the same time. Give us the flight number and the scheduled landing time so the ride home is arranged before you leave.
We prefer 72 hours’ notice, and about a week for a large group, though dispatch answers around the clock and short-notice trips come down to what is available. Route details live on the Springfield to St. Louis airport page, and travelers on the western edge can start from our Quincy service area.
The shorter airport run
Point your next trip south instead.
Executive Transportation has been running the southbound airport trip out of Springfield since 2004. Send the flight and the pickup address and we will price the transfer.
Questions about riding from Central Illinois to Lambert
Is there a shuttle or car service from Central Illinois to the St. Louis airport?
Executive Transportation runs chauffeured transfers to St. Louis Lambert from across Central Illinois, including Springfield, Jacksonville, Quincy, Decatur and the towns between them. Springfield sits about 107 miles out, roughly 1 hour 40 minutes of mostly interstate driving. Pickups happen at homes, offices and hotels, and one vehicle carries the whole party rather than one seat at a time. Tell us the airline and the pickup address: request a quote or call (217) 523-5466.
How far is Quincy, Illinois, from the St. Louis airport?
Executive Transportation figures Quincy to St. Louis Lambert at about 130 miles and about 2 hours 10 minutes. The route crosses the Mississippi at Quincy and spends most of its miles on US 61 in northeast Missouri rather than on an interstate, so it rewards a driver who already knows the road. Lambert is the nearest large hub to Quincy by a wide margin. See Quincy to the St. Louis airport.
Should someone in Decatur fly out of St. Louis or drive up to Chicago?
Executive Transportation points most Decatur travelers south. Decatur to Lambert is about 133 miles and about 2 hours 20 minutes. Decatur to O’Hare is about 188 miles and about 3 hours 10 minutes, and the Chicago version ends in metro traffic that builds through the morning. Unless a specific nonstop only leaves Chicago, the southbound trip gives back most of a morning. See Decatur to the St. Louis airport.
How early does a ride to Lambert need to leave for a morning flight?
Executive Transportation works backward from the gate. Lambert points to the TSA guidance of two hours before a domestic departure and three before an international one, so an 8 a.m. flight means being at the terminal door by 6 a.m. Add about 1 hour 40 minutes from Springfield and the pickup lands near 4:15 a.m. Western towns start earlier, and we build the exact time with you. Call (217) 523-5466 and we will set the pickup.
Does a chauffeured ride to St. Louis Lambert cost less than one to O’Hare?
Executive Transportation prices a transfer on distance, drive time, vehicle size and the day you travel, so a shorter run generally quotes lower. From Springfield the Lambert trip covers about 107 miles against about 201 to O’Hare, and that gap shows up in the number. Group size matters too, since the quote covers the vehicle rather than each passenger. Request a Quote with your flight details.
Which Lambert terminal will my chauffeur drop me at?
Executive Transportation drops at whichever terminal your airline uses, and at Lambert that split matters. As of September 2026 the airport lists Southwest, British Airways and Lufthansa at Terminal 2, with American, Delta, United, Alaska, Air Canada, Frontier and Southern Airways Express at Terminal 1. The airport says there is no walking route between the two, so tell us the airline when you book. See our St. Louis Lambert page.
