Peoria Airport Parking and Choosing a Central IL Airport

What each of the four Central Illinois regional airports actually flies, what it costs to leave a car, and when a nonstop out of Chicago or St. Louis is worth the longer drive.

Peoria airport parking costs nothing in the general lots, and travelers who only ever fly out of Chicago are usually surprised to hear it. Four commercial airports sit within an hour and a half of Springfield: Peoria, Bloomington-Normal, Willard and Decatur. What separates them is not the lot. It is which airlines fly there and where those flights actually go.

The short version

Four regional airports, one decision

Closest
Decatur, about 44 miles and 50 minutes from Springfield, with one destination on its own flight page.
Widest schedule
Peoria, three airlines and 11 destinations, about 75 miles and 1 hour 15 minutes.
Cost to leave a car
Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and Decatur all park free. Willard posts $10 a day.
The real trade
A regional airport almost always means a connection. A nonstop usually means driving to Chicago, St. Louis or Indianapolis.

Everything below comes from each airport’s own website, checked on September 15, 2026. Regional air service changes more often than anything else in this post, so treat the route lists as a snapshot and confirm with the airline before you buy. Drive times are the calibrated figures we use when we schedule a Springfield pickup.

Peoria airport parking is free, and PIA carries the widest schedule

General Wayne A. Downing Peoria International Airport sits about 75 miles northwest of Springfield, roughly 1 hour 15 minutes up the road. It is the biggest of the four by a clear margin, and it is the first choice for riders who book our chauffeured car service in Peoria.

Peoria airport flights split into two groups. American and United run the hub connections: American to Chicago O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte, United to Chicago O’Hare and Denver. Allegiant runs the leisure side, with Las Vegas, Orlando Sanford, Phoenix Mesa, Tampa St. Petersburg and Punta Gorda, plus seasonal service to Destin, Sarasota and Denver. The airport counts 11 destinations across the three carriers.

On parking, PIA states that its general areas are free regardless of how long you are gone. Metered spaces near the doors are meant for visits under two hours, a gated Premier Lot sits closest to the west entrance and has had a waiting list since 2025, and a free shuttle bus runs between the lots and the terminal from 4:30 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Peoria suits two travelers well: anyone headed to Florida, Las Vegas or Phoenix who can use an Allegiant nonstop, and business travelers whose connection works through O’Hare, Dallas, Charlotte or Denver. See our Peoria airport car service page for pickup details.

Bloomington-Normal airport gives you a third hub

Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal is about 68 miles from Springfield, roughly 1 hour 10 minutes, which makes it the second closest of the group and the local field for our car service in Bloomington-Normal.

Three airlines serve it. American flies to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth. Allegiant flies to Orlando Sanford, Phoenix Mesa and Tampa St. Pete-Clearwater. Delta flies to Atlanta, and that Atlanta flight is the one thing none of the other three airports offer. It puts a third major hub network within reach without a drive to Chicago, which matters if your company books Delta or your destination is served better from the southeast.

Parking is free, with a short-term lot directly in front of the terminal, a long-term lot beside it, and a complimentary shuttle that runs daily. The airport’s own site adds a caution worth repeating: schedules can change with little advance notice, so check the carrier rather than a saved screenshot. Our Bloomington-Normal airport transportation page covers the run from Springfield.

Willard swaps free parking for two American hubs

The Willard airport Champaign travelers talk about is actually in Savoy, just south of the University of Illinois campus, about 82 miles and 1 hour 20 minutes from Springfield. That makes it the farthest of the four, though it sits only a few minutes from anyone using our car service in Champaign-Urbana.

One airline serves it. American flies daily to Chicago O’Hare and Dallas-Fort Worth, and the airport points to the connections those two hubs open up. It is a narrow schedule, but for anyone whose itinerary already routes through O’Hare or DFW, it is a short drive to a familiar boarding pass.

Willard is also the only one of the four that charges to park. Rates effective November 10, 2025, are free under two hours, $3 for two to five hours, and $10 for five to twenty-four hours and for each day after. A week away runs about $70, which is modest next to a Chicago garage but is not nothing. Details on the drive are on our Willard Airport car service page.

The Decatur Illinois airport is closest and simplest

Decatur Airport on South Airport Road is about 44 miles from Springfield, roughly 50 minutes, the shortest airport run in this comparison and a short hop for our car service in Decatur. Its terminal is a single ground level building of about 24,000 square feet with airline and car rental counters and baggage claim under one roof.

The schedule is as simple as it gets. The airport’s own Fly Decatur page lists one destination, Chicago O’Hare, and sends travelers to United.com to book. Parking is free of charge, with close-in spaces by the terminal and a separate lot for longer trips.

That makes Decatur excellent for one specific traveler and useless for another. If your trip connects through O’Hare, you get a 50-minute drive, a free space and a terminal you can cross in a minute. If your trip does not route through O’Hare, Decatur cannot help you, and you are better off at one of the other three. Our Decatur airport car service page has the pickup details.

How far each one is from Springfield

The four regional fields cluster inside an hour and a half. The nonstop hubs are a different category of drive, and that gap is the whole decision.

A regional connection or a longer drive to a nonstop

Fly from a regional airport

  • Under an hour and a half of driving from Springfield.
  • Small terminal, short walk from the door to the gate.
  • Parking is free at three of the four.
  • Almost always a connection, so one delay can cost you the day.
  • Fewer flights a day, so a cancellation may mean tomorrow.

Drive to a nonstop hub

  • One flight, no change of planes, no misconnect.
  • Many departures a day, so a missed flight is recoverable.
  • Three hours or more each way to Chicago or Indianapolis.
  • Parking is a real bill that grows every day you are gone.
  • The drive home lands after a long travel day.

Parking, drive time and a checked bag change the answer

Three levers move this decision more than fare does.

Parking. Because Peoria, Bloomington-Normal and Decatur charge nothing, parking mostly drops out of the regional side of the math. At a hub it does not. A week in a Chicago garage is a serious line item, and even the cheaper St. Louis lots add up, which we walked through in our look at Lambert parking and the drive to it.

Drive time. Leaving from Springfield, a regional airport saves about two hours each way against O’Hare. Over a round trip that is most of a working day. It is also two fewer trips through Chicago traffic in the dark, and those hours come back whole if you book airport car service rather than drive yourself.

A checked bag. This is the one people underweight. On a two leg itinerary a checked bag gets handled twice, and a missed connection separates you from it at the hub. A nonstop removes that entirely. If you are traveling with a bag you cannot afford to lose, for a presentation, a wedding or a trade show booth, the nonstop is worth the extra drive more often than the fare difference suggests.

The cheapest lot in the world does not help if the flight leaving from it takes you the wrong direction first.

Schedules move. Regional routes get added and dropped more often than hub routes, and Allegiant’s seasonal flights come and go with the calendar. Everything here reflects each airport’s own site on September 15, 2026. Check the airline before you buy a ticket.

How a ride to any of these airports is set up

  1. Tell us the airport and the flight. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote online with your pickup address, the airport, and your departure time.
  2. Pick the vehicle. Sedans carry two or three passengers, luxury SUVs five or six, and a Sprinter van holds 14. One quote covers everyone riding.
  3. Ride to the terminal door. A uniformed chauffeur picks you up in Springfield or anywhere in Central Illinois and drops you at departures.
  4. Book the return at the same time. Give us the flight number and scheduled arrival, including a leg coming back into a different airport than you left from.

We prefer 72 hours’ notice and about a week for large groups, but call anytime. Short-notice trips depend on vehicle availability. Every field in this guide, and every other airport we drive, is on our airports we serve page.

Central Illinois regional airport questions

Which airlines fly out of Peoria International Airport?

Executive Transportation checked flypia.com on September 15, 2026: Allegiant, American and United serve Peoria, and the airport lists 11 destinations across the three. American reaches O’Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth and Charlotte, United reaches O’Hare and Denver, and Allegiant flies leisure routes including Las Vegas, Orlando Sanford and Phoenix Mesa. Route lists change, so confirm with the airline. We drive to Peoria from across Central Illinois. Call (217) 523-5466.

Is parking free at the Central Illinois regional airports?

Executive Transportation found three of the four park free. Peoria states its general lots cost nothing regardless of trip length, Bloomington-Normal calls its parking always free, and Decatur lists parking free of charge. Willard is the exception, posting $10 a day since November 10, 2025. Free parking still leaves you driving home tired after a late arrival. Request a Quote and leave the car at home.

Should I fly from a Central Illinois regional airport or drive to a nonstop?

Executive Transportation sees it come down to the connection. A regional airport saves roughly two hours of driving each way from Springfield, but nearly every itinerary out of one includes a change of planes. Driving to O’Hare, Lambert or Indianapolis buys a nonstop and removes the misconnect risk. Trip length and whether you check a bag usually settle it. Call (217) 523-5466 and we will quote either version.

What changes the price of a car service from Springfield to Peoria or Bloomington?

Executive Transportation quotes these runs on distance, vehicle size, time of day and whether you need a return. Peoria is about 75 miles from Springfield and Bloomington-Normal about 68, so both are far shorter than a Chicago run. Group size sets the vehicle, and a single quote covers every passenger in it. Send us the flight and we will price it: request a quote.

Can a chauffeur drive me to Willard Airport in Savoy from Springfield?

Yes. Executive Transportation drives to University of Illinois Willard Airport in Savoy, about 82 miles and an hour and twenty minutes from Springfield. A chauffeur drops you at the terminal door, which also skips the $10 a day parking Willard posts. We collect travelers from houses, workplaces and hotels throughout the region. See our Willard Airport car service page.

Can one car service cover a flight out of Peoria and a return into Bloomington-Normal?

Yes. Executive Transportation handles split itineraries, and they are common when a fare is better out of one regional airport than the other. Book the outbound and the return together so dispatch has both dates, and give us the flight number and scheduled arrival for the leg coming home. Dispatch answers 24 hours a day. Call (217) 523-5466 or browse every airport we serve.
