Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport sits about three miles from downtown Springfield, and that one fact reshapes the front of a business trip. The drive takes about ten minutes. The airport asks you to be there 60 minutes before departure. You can be through screening and sitting at the gate while a colleague headed for O’Hare is still south of Bloomington.

What Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport actually is
Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport, code SPI, is Springfield’s commercial airport, owned and run by the Springfield Airport Authority at 1200 Capital Airport Drive. There is one terminal. Ticket counters for American Airlines, Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways sit between doors B and C, and baggage claim is at the east end near door D, next to the rental counters.
Small is the entire point. No inter-terminal train, no long walk to a remote concourse. TSA screens every passenger at SPI through a single checkpoint lane, with a separate line for PreCheck.
One thing to know before booking a late flight: door B opens 90 minutes ahead of the first scheduled departure, and the terminal closes at 11:30 p.m. or once the last flight has landed. That matters more coming home than going out, and we come back to it.
Sixty minutes at the front of the trip, not three and a half hours
The case for a small airport is about the hours nobody counts. Compare the same traveler taking the same 9 a.m. departure from each airport.
| What it costs you | Flying from SPI | Driving to O’Hare |
|---|---|---|
| Drive to the airport | about 10 minutes | about 3 hours 27 minutes |
| Recommended arrival | 60 minutesThe airport’s own guidance. | longer at a hub, worth checking with your airline |
| Parking | free, any length | $16 to $43 per day on-airport |
| Miles driven, round trip | about 6 | about 402 |
| Before you are airside | a little over an hour | most of a working day |
The O’Hare parking figures come from the Chicago Department of Aviation’s posted rates, which we worked through in our guide to O’Hare parking cost against a car service.
Short drive and a connection, or long drive and a nonstop
This is the tradeoff that decides most Springfield itineraries. SPI’s domestic connecting route runs through Chicago O’Hare, so flying anywhere else from Springfield means a short hop north and a connection. Driving to O’Hare means three and a half hours of your own time and then a nonstop.
Travelers assume the connection is the riskier half. Often it is the opposite. If your flight out of Springfield runs late and you miss the onward leg, the airline rebooks you. If I-55 shuts down and you miss a nonstop you drove three and a half hours to reach, that is nobody’s problem but yours.
The drive also carries the variable a table cannot show. Chicago approaches run long in the weekday peaks, and the last thirty miles are where a comfortable schedule turns tight.
Fly out of SPI
- About ten minutes to the terminal.
- One hour recommended, one checkpoint lane.
- Parking costs nothing, any length.
- A connection, but one the airline owns.
- Fewer flights a day, so a cancellation stings.
Drive to a hub
- About 3 hours 27 minutes each way to O’Hare, 1 hour 40 to Lambert.
- A nonstop, and far more departures.
- Usually the cheaper fare, especially for a family.
- An unprotected leg with no rebooking behind it.
- You come home to the same drive, often after dark.
Who the SPI airport suits best
A small airport is not right for everyone, and we say so to clients regularly. It fits some travelers very well:
- Business travelers on a tight day. Three saved hours each way is the argument. Our corporate airport transfers are built for this trip.
- State government and association travel. The Capitol complex and the association offices downtown are minutes from the terminal.
- Anyone flying the nonstops. If Orlando or Punta Gorda is the destination, there is no reason to drive anywhere.
- Winter travelers. Ten minutes on an icy January morning beats three and a half hours on I-55.
- Late returners. Landing at Springfield at 10 p.m. beats landing at O’Hare and starting a long drive.
It fits others poorly. Families chasing the lowest fare usually find it at a hub, and anyone needing an international itinerary will want Chicago or St. Louis. If your route is not on the SPI board, the question becomes which bigger airport to drive to: Lambert at about 107 miles, or O’Hare at about 201.
Parking and drop-off at a terminal this size
Parking at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is free. The airport states plainly that you may park in the terminal lot for the entire length of your trip, and that every space counts as both short term and long term. No economy lot, no shuttle, no daily rate compounding while you are away. Against $16 to $43 a day at O’Hare, that is a real number in SPI’s favor.
Drop-off is just as plain. The drop-off door is a short walk from the counters between doors B and C, and there is only one building, so nobody asks which terminal. Coming back, baggage claim sits at the east end near door D, which makes a pickup one clear meeting point.
Flights from Springfield IL change, so check them twice
This is the part of any small airport guide that goes stale first. As of September 15, 2026, the airport’s own airlines page lists three carriers and three nonstop destinations.
| Airline | Nonstop destinations listed |
|---|---|
| American Airlines | Chicago O’Hare, the connecting gateway for most SPI itineraries |
| Allegiant Air | Punta Gorda, Florida |
| Breeze Airways | Orlando, Florida |
Treat that table as a photograph, not a fixture. Routes at airports this size get added for a season and dropped again, and carriers have come and gone at SPI before. Check flyspi.com before planning around one. If it has moved on, we can get you to whichever airport still has it.
The ten minute ride, and the midnight one that matters more
Nobody strictly needs a chauffeur for a ten minute drive to a terminal with free parking. We will say that out loud. The outbound ride is a convenience, worth it when the car has to stay home, when three colleagues would otherwise take three cars, or when the roads are bad before dawn.
The return is the trip that earns its keep. The terminal closes at 11:30 p.m. or after the last flight lands, and the rental counters shut with it. No taxis idle outside a field that handles a handful of flights a day. You walk out of a building closing behind you, at midnight, into a lot where your options are whatever you arranged before you left.
At a small airport the ride out is a convenience. The ride home at midnight is the reason you booked one.
That is the case for reserving both ends at once. Our airport transportation covers SPI and every airport we drive to, and the Springfield SPI page has the detail for this one.
- Send the itinerary. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote with your pickup address, departure time, and how many people are riding.
- Pick the vehicle. Two or three people fit an executive sedan, a luxury SUV takes up to six, and a Sprinter van holds a team of 14.
- Ride to the door. A uniformed chauffeur collects you in Springfield or anywhere in Central Illinois and drops you at the terminal door.
- Book the return at the same time. Send the flight number and the scheduled landing time so the ride home is set before you fly.
We prefer 72 hours’ notice and about a week for large groups, though you can call anytime. Short notice depends on what is available, and dispatch answers 24 hours a day.

Questions about flying out of Springfield
Is Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport worth flying out of instead of driving to Chicago?
Executive Transportation sees both work, and the deciding factor is usually the calendar rather than the fare. Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is about ten minutes from downtown Springfield and asks travelers to arrive 60 minutes before departure, so the front of the trip costs a little over an hour. Driving to O’Hare costs about 3 hours 27 minutes each way. Call (217) 523-5466 or request a quote for either one.
What airlines fly out of the Springfield IL airport?
Executive Transportation checked the Springfield Airport Authority’s site on September 15, 2026: American Airlines, Allegiant Air and Breeze Airways sell tickets at SPI, with nonstop service listed to Chicago O’Hare, Punta Gorda and Orlando. Routes at small airports are added and dropped regularly, so confirm at flyspi.com before planning around one. See our Springfield airport car service page.
How early should I get to SPI airport before my flight?
Executive Transportation builds Springfield pickups around the airport’s own guidance, which is to arrive 60 minutes before departure for check-in and screening. SPI screens everyone through a single checkpoint lane, with a separate line for PreCheck, so the building moves quickly. One full flight and one lane can still stack up, so we leave room. Tell us your departure time when you request a ride.
What does a car service to Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport cost?
Executive Transportation quotes each SPI trip instead of posting a rate, because the number moves with the vehicle, the pickup address, the hour, and whether the return is booked at the same time. A short run from a Springfield address and a run in from Jacksonville or Taylorville are not the same trip. Call (217) 523-5466 and a coordinator will price it.
Can a car service pick me up at SPI after a late flight?
Executive Transportation picks up at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport at night, which is when a reserved ride is worth the most. The terminal closes at 11:30 p.m. or after the last arrival, and the rental counters close with it, so a late landing leaves very little to fall back on, and a chauffeur already waiting at baggage claim is the answer. Send the flight number and landing time through our booking page.
Do I still need a ride if parking at SPI is free?
Executive Transportation would tell you no for plenty of trips. Parking at Abraham Lincoln Capital Airport is free for the length of your trip, so driving yourself is genuinely cheap. A ride earns its place when the car is needed at home, when colleagues are traveling together, or when you are landing near midnight. Call (217) 523-5466 and we will tell you which trip is which.
